It was a whirlwind week. One in which, yet again, I was reminded to never say, "NEVER". As in, my Emily is finally at an age where she can somewhat be trusted and would, "NEVER" put something in her mouth that she shouldn't. Enter stage right, a screw. Yes, a screw. That she swallowed. For the life of me, I cannot understand
why a screw would even have been in the vicinity of her mouth, but the best explanation she could provide (despite my best interrogation techniques [or Jedi-mind tricks, as Steve would say])was that her "mind" told her to do it. I told her that the next time her mind told her to do anything so ridiculous again, to check with me first. So after an evening in the pediatric ER to verify that the screw had indeed passed through her esophagus and into her stomach, I doned my "waste management" hat. And after two days of making the journey through her GI tract and sifting through "waste", whallah....the infamous screw.
She was the model patient. And the red boots? They were quite a hit in the ER....
We also celebrated the baptism of my very handsome and sweet nephew Danny.

And while welcoming a little one to the church is a celebration in and of itself, the fact that his parents walked this aisle as bride and groom just eight years ago and watching their love grow,

and grow,

and grow,

made the day even more special.
A special day to laugh,

love on little ones,

fix the occasional wardrobe malfunction,

and be blessed.

And though we would love life to be a constant party, there is still work to be done. My children are always "helpful"...especially when work includes a ride on the lawn tractor. Too bad I can't find a tractor that they would be willing to ride that would clean their rooms, bathe them, do the laundry and dishes!

We culminated the week with the much anticipated, Halloween. After a few dress rehearsals in costume wearing (and a little bribery with lollipops), we went from wearing a Buzz Lightyear t-shirt and jetpack

to the actual costume (minus the hood, "NO 'at, mama..!!").

Emily was always the hospitable sister when we arrived at her Halloween party/parade at school, making sure her brother was included in all the festivites.

I cherish these moments. The moments where they abandon all of the competition and bickering for a few moments, and their love for one another shines through....

Our quest for the perfect pumpkin this year led us to a farm just minutes from our house. Growing up in S FL, I always dreamed of what it must be like to go to a farm and walk through miles of pumpkins, while God's color palate surrounded you on trees above and leaves below, with a whisper of winter on the breeze. While there weren't exactly miles of pumpkins, or beautiful autumn colored leaves, and it was a muggy 78 degrees, we did take a hayride that led us out to the Loxahattchee Wildlife preserve. Beauty was abundant in the form of Everglades grasses with a storm on the horizon,

and towering majestic cypress trees draped with spanish moss.

And never fear, we found the pumpkins....nestled safely among a cucumber crop.

So Fall, take your Norman Rockwell painting of the perfect Pumpkin Harvest and shove it. You've got nothing on us...
This year, my sister Christina was working at a haunted house in downtown Delray. We stopped by to watch her dance, and although the kids knew it was her and recognized her voice, they could not get past the makeup....as evidenced by the unsettled look that was permanently afixed to their little innocent faces....

Which brings me to Halloween. This year, we went with a family Halloween theme...Toy Story. The kids have been crazy for Toy Story ever since they saw it in the movie theatre this summer. So, Steve and I joined in the fun....

We embarked shortly before dark, on a marathon Trick or Treating session through our neighborhood. And while Stephen wasn't exactly sure about going up to strangers doors and needed a little encouragement at first

he was a pro after trick or treating over a mile that night. And because little Jessie, Buzz and Fairy legs get tired,

Pawpaw was there with his limo to give a lift home to weary toys.

Because around these here parts, No Toy gets Left Behind.....
